The 2024 Thrive by Five Index reveals that a staggering 58% of 4-year-olds in South African early learning programmes are failing to meet age-appropriate developmental milestones. This statistic makes the role of quality ECD centres more crucial than ever.

Annie’s Ark Preschool is home to a team of fantastic teachers who share a passion for supporting early learners in South Africa. Tamryn Van Noie, the Head Teacher at Annie’s Ark, highlights this dedication by sharing her own journey of educating and inspiring young minds.

Many people don’t fully grasp what it truly means to be an educator in an ECD centre. Tamryn explains that the best way to understand this role is to recognise that you are developing minds. She notes that because young children are so mouldable, teachers must lead by example and be mindful of everything they do and say.

Tamryn emphasises that being a teacher is more than just a title; it is about caring for a child's holistic well-being every single day. Because teachers spend such significant time with the children in their care, they are often present for vital milestones, such as first steps and first words. These moments create a deep, meaningful connection between a teacher and their students.

For those just starting out, Tamryn’s advice for new ECD teachers is to communicate as much as possible and never be afraid to ask questions whenever help or clarification is needed.

To support their mission of shaping young minds, Annie’s Ark utilises GROW ECD resources and tools to ensure their learners receive the best possible start. Notably, Grow ECD was part of the 2024 cohort for the Mastercard Foundation EdTech Fellowship.

At Injini, we believe that ECD teachers are truly special because they are moulding the future. Like all educators, they are teaching the next generation of pilots, doctors, lawyers, and changemakers. At the end of the day, the greatest impact you can have is simply by being the best version of yourself for them.
